Check it out

Birds in the Moon and other theatrical, artistic, and poetic presentations on August 28th and 29th in Berkeley.

Check out this message from Malcolm Margolin on what all is happening and so forth.

Please join Malcolm Margolin and California I CAN on Sunday, August 29th at 3:00 PM for a special performance by four California Indian Culture Bearers followed by a most remarkable mobile chamber opera:  Birds in the Moon!

Dear Friends,

On Sunday, August 29, I’ll be doing something that I've dreamed of doing for 40 years: collaborating with Deborah O’Grady. Deborah is one of the most creative people I have ever met. A photographer and video artist, she has produced major events throughout the world, often working with symphony orchestras, Indigenous tribes, casts of performers, scholars, and others. Now she’s designed a mobile chamber opera, “Birds in the Moon,” an opera on the theme of human migration, expertly staged in a portable, high-tech shipping container. Deborah calls it a magic theatrical box, but I think of it as a kind of cultural food truck. As part of its tour, it will be parked at 2210 Harold Way in downtown Berkeley on the weekend of August 28 & 29.

Before both evening performances of “Birds in the Moon,” Deborah has invited California I CAN, La Pena Cultural Center, Electric Squeezebox Orchestra and Bay Area Creative to each host a one-hour performance. On Saturday, young poets from SPARC poetry, a program of Bay Area Creative that builds art communities in schools and hosts workshops and open mics, will take the stage at 3pm, followed by the Latin fusion band Calmao with special guest Cumbia dancers from Colombia, at 5pm.
On Sunday, August 29, California I CAN was asked to present something about our work with Native cultures. We’re excited to bring to the stage four remarkable California Indian culture bearers, who will transport us with stories and song. Cafe Ohlone co-founders Vincent Medina (Chochenyo Ohlone) & Louis Trevino (Rumsen Ohlone), and graphic artist Eric Wilder (Kashia Pomo) will share their lifelong commitments to Native culture from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Traditional basketweaver and California I CAN's California Native Ways Festival Curator, Jennifer Bates (Central Sierra Mewuk) will be emceeing.

This event is free, outdoors, and open to the public. California I CAN will have an information table on Sunday. I will also be there, from 3pm to 5pm.

I hope to see you there,

Malcolm
