Most Embarrassing Moment

My mother Ahdel always thought of others first. She did not speak about herself much. Mainly she'd let others speak. She was an excellent listener. She was polite and proper yet behind it most tolerant and open. One day long ago at the train station, she saw an acquaintance standing by herself. Ahdel knew the woman's husband had recently died. She went up to the woman and feeling a little nervous and awkward, searching for the right words and tone, she said, "Grace, I'm so happy to hear about your husband."

Then of course she recoiled at what had just somehow escaped her mouth, was mortified, and did the best damage control she could.  It would embarrass her to think about it for the rest of her life.
